Economics UNIT 3

Teaching, learning and assessing: Summative IA1 2019

In Unit 3, Topic 1 the assessment instrument is an Examination - combination response worth 25% of the total final mark for the subject.

  • A combination response means that the assessment has multiple types of responses: specifically multiple choice, short responses and one extended response.
  • The extended response is a response to stimulus. This means it provides an unseen question and unseen sources for students to analyse and evaluate. The sources must be unfamiliar to validly assessment higher order skills (not from memory) and so students cannot prepare a written response for.
  • The extended response is not an essay, it is a response, therefore introductions and conclusions do not contribute to marks. However, clear communication of key points, details, examples and support for statements require clear signposting and is assisted by a well planned response prior to writing. The time limit of the examination allows for 15 minutes of planning to occur.
